▶Objectives
The main objective of the project was to develop and implement a standardized, practical employment model for individuals with intellectual disabilities across Europe. We aimed to increase the professional competencies of adults working in the employment and education of people with intellectual disabilities—such as job counselors, special education teachers, NGO staff, and cooperative members—by providing them with a comprehensive guidebook and structured training. Through this model, we sought to improve access to employment, support inclusive job placement practices, and ensure sustainable social inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, we aimed to foster transnational cooperation by sharing best practices, aligning approaches, and creating a replicable tool that could be adapted in different countries. A key goal was also to raise awareness and shift societal attitudes, demonstrating that people with intellectual disabilities can meaningfully contribute to the labor market when supported with appropriate tools and inclusive environments.
▶Activities
We implemented a wide range of activities to achieve the project’s goals. First, we held a virtual kick-off meeting with all partners to assign roles, establish timelines, and ensure a shared understanding of the project structure. We then conducted a situation analysis in each partner country to assess existing practices and challenges in the employment of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Based on this analysis, we collaboratively developed the No Barriers to Employment Program Book as the main intellectual output. Next, each partner organized and delivered targeted training sessions: job counselors in Türkiye, NGO staff in Sweden, cooperative members in Portugal, and special education teachers in Italy. These trainings tested and refined the guidebook content. Pre- and post-tests, interviews, and observation tools were used to assess learning outcomes and gather feedback for improvement. We held two midterm evaluation meetings (in Italy and Türkiye) to review progress, align on adjustments, and prepare for the final implementation phase. The project culminated in a large-scale closing symposium in Eskişehir, where the guidebook was disseminated to a wider audience. We also distributed books.
▶Impact
The main concrete output of the project was the development and publication of the No Barriers to Employment Program Book, a comprehensive and practical guide for professionals supporting the employment of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The guidebook was produced collaboratively, translated into partner languages, and distributed both digitally and in 2,000 printed copies across Europe. Other key results included the successful training of 83 professionals—job counselors, NGO staff, cooperative members, and special education teachers—in four countries, who then applied the guidebook in real job placement processes. We also conducted pilot implementations where trained professionals supported individuals with intellectual disabilities in entering the workforce, using the guidebook as a reference. Additionally, we held two transnational evaluation meetings and a well-attended closing symposium with 122 participants, enhancing the project’s visibility and encouraging stakeholder engagement. We collected pre/post-tests, interviews, and surveys to measure the effectiveness of the guidebook and training activities. As a result, the project strengthened institutional cooperation and improved professional capacity.
