Summary

The project addressed the growing need for modern, digital learning materials that overcome the limitations of printed textbooks, which often become outdated in rapidly evolving engineering and technology fields. The Covid-19 pandemic further demonstrated the need for flexible, online resources that allow teaching and learning to continue without interruption. Traditional textbooks cannot be updated quickly enough to reflect new knowledge and technologies. To respond, the consortium proposed The Evolving Textbook (TET) – a digital platform that enables continuous updates of learning content, integration of multimedia resources, and co-creation of materials by both teachers and students. The initiative targeted two main needs: to help educators adapt content faster to scientific and pedagogical progress, and to provide students with more interactive, engaging, and personalised materials. The platform allows feedback, suggestions, and new contributions from students, creating a textbook that evolves over time and aligns closely with real learning needs.

Objectives

The main objective of the TET project was the development of an innovative and evolving textbook that enables easy and frequent adaptations and actively involves students in the creation of learning materials. The aim was to make higher education more attractive and adapted to the needs and expectations of individual students. The platform relied on the extensive use of digital tools and methods, providing teachers and students with the means to dynamically co-create content. Goals included strengthening students’ digital literacy and readiness, improving the processes of assessing knowledge and competences, and developing practices that address differences in pedagogical approaches, socio-economic conditions, and cultural specifics. The project also sought to address social, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity in Europe, to support the integration of new digital capabilities into higher education institutions, and to promote interconnected higher education systems. In addition, the objectives included enhancing management competences, supporting the internationalisation of pedagogical strategies, reinforcing cooperation among partners, and raising the quality of preparation and implementation of international projects.

Activities

The project was implemented through five interconnected work packages. WP1 (Management) ensured effective coordination, communication, and reporting. WP2 (Analysis) examined existing textbooks and online tools, gathered input from teachers and students, and defined pedagogical and technical specifications for the platform. WP3 (Content Development) created an ontology schema for structuring learning materials, prepared templates and support tools, and produced pilot materials for selected engineering courses. WP4 (Platform Development) designed, developed, and integrated functional modules into a complete digital system, tested the platform in partner institutions, and produced technical documentation and a user manual. WP5 (Evaluation and Dissemination) analyzed usage data and learning outcomes, compared the evolving textbook with traditional approaches, and organized national and international dissemination events. All activities were completed collaboratively and aligned with Erasmus+ quality standards.

Impact

The key result of the project is The Evolving Textbook (TET) – a fully functional digital platform that enables the creation and continuous updating of textbooks through collaborative authoring. It combines structured text with multimedia resources, integrates role-based editing and version control, and allows teachers and students to jointly improve materials. A distinctive feature is the active role of students, who can give feedback, suggest enhancements, and contribute new content, while teachers can track usage analytics and adapt materials accordingly. The platform was deployed and tested in real courses at all partner universities, supported by a user manual, technical documentation, and a collection of sample course units. It benefits teachers by increasing flexibility and responsiveness, and students by providing engaging, interactive, and personalized learning materials. The solution is transferable to other academic fields, vocational education, and lifelong learning contexts, ensuring sustainability and wider educational impact.
