Objectives

We see remembrance education(RE) as an important tool for shaping the attitudes of today's youth. This educational approach not only reminds key historical events(especially those that were accompanied by human rights violations,...genocides, wars),but also develops empathy and critical thinking. It leads to a deeper understanding of the importance of human rights and motivates young people to take active action, thus promoting the prevention of future tragedies and the formation of a diverse and respectful society. In this project,we aimed to open the topic of RE and introduce its educational principles to Slovak and Czech teachers. We wanted to highlight its importance and impact on the formation of young people's moral values and attitudes, and thus motivate teachers to actively use it in the educational process. We tried to develop their key competences necessary in RE. We believe that in this way we will be able to strengthen the voice of the young generation, who will be able to better understand the past and at the same time actively contribute to the development of democratic values in our society. We also believe that teachers, based on their own experience, will appreciate the benefits of RE and will actively use it in their work.

Activities

During the project period September 2022-September 2024, we implemented several activities, which focused primarily on the promotion of remembrance education(RE) in the teaching process. The project started with a partners meeting in Prague and a training of trainers in Bratislava. This was followed by the research and development of five learning activities and also the content of an interactive walk in Banská Bystrica, which is available in the iWalk app. Two-way job shadowing, sharing of good practice and peer consultation took place regarding the content and implementation of individual project activities, but also the development of the project's learning outcomes. We held a series of webinars for teachers focused on specific topics such as life under socialism, propaganda, memorial days or civic activism, as well as in-person trainings on memory education in Bratislava and Košice. In August 2024, we implemented the first summer teachers' conference "Sadness and Joy of History" in Bratislava, which provided a space for discussion on RE and presented the results and new educational outputs of the project. A final evaluation meeting was held online in September 2024, where we evaluated the results and cooperation with partners.

Impact

The project has produced concrete outputs and results that have strengthened the field of remembrance education(RE) in our area.We have created 5 educational activities, which we have gradually tested during our workshops and finally developed into a methodological manual, which is available on the Foundation's website. We also created an iWalk Banská Bystrica, which we presented at the summer teachers' conference, but also to representatives of the Jewish religious community in Banská Bystrica and to the education department of the SNU Museum.During the project we held 6 thematic webinars for teachers, 3 of which are available on the YouTube channel of the MSF. In addition, 2 three-day trainings on RE were held in Bratislava and Košice. The culmination of the project was a two-day conference on RE in August 2024, during which we offered 9 workshops, 2 expert presentations and a public discussion in cooperation with many experts and lecturers. The series of project activities also laid the foundations for a teacher community with an interest in RE, which has the potential to grow further. At the end of the project, we organized an online evaluation meeting to assess the project results and open up new possibilities for collaboration.
