Our main goal was to modernize cardiovascular surgery education by creating accessible, high-quality, and standardized digital learning tools. We aimed to provide video-based surgical training, a structured digital logbook, a visual atlas of techniques, and a research manual with standardized outcome indicators. We wanted to create an all-in-one platform that is freely accessible, continuously evolving through user feedback, and capable of adapting to future needs. Together, these tools would eliminate barriers to learning, promote uniform documentation, support better-designed scientific research, and enhance the technical and academic development of surgeons. We also aimed to foster international collaboration, strengthen educational standardization, and ensure long-term sustainability through open-access resources, ultimately improving both surgical training quality and patient outcomes.
▶Activities
The project was implemented across five structured work packages. We created the Digital Operating Gallery, a video-based platform featuring expert-reviewed surgical demonstrations. We developed the Digital Surgical Logbook as both a mobile app and a web-based system to document surgical experience and progress. The Cardiovascular Surgery Atlas was produced with detailed illustrations of over 50 surgical techniques, serving as a comprehensive visual reference. The Manual for Outcome Indicators was developed to define standardized clinical variables for scientific research. Project management activities included international partner coordination, digital platform development, quality control, and budget oversight. All content was validated through expert collaboration and pilot testing involving a wide range of surgeons across multiple institutions. The resulting platform is open access, and when launched, it is expected to become an attractive and valuable educational resource for cardiovascular surgeons worldwide.
▶Impact
The project produced four main outputs: (1) the Digital Operating Gallery with 25 expert-reviewed surgical training videos, (2) the Digital Surgical Logbook mobile app enabling structured documentation and mentor validation, (3) the Cardiovascular Surgery Atlas with detailed visualizations of 50+ procedures across 20 topics, and (4) the Manual for Outcome Indicators covering 17 clinical topics for standardized surgical research. All outputs were developed collaboratively and are accessible at www.digitalcardiovascularsurgery.org. These tools support equal access to high-quality education, standardize training, and promote international research cooperation.
