Objectives

The aim of the project was to inform young people aged 16 to 26 that wasting food means harming the environment. Given that this age group includes the most environmental activists, we believed this message would be crucial for them. Each international partner implemented their part of the project in their respective region, and all results were presented at a final conference in February 2025 in Prague. Activities

Czech Republic: We organized a hackathon called WastedHack, aimed at enabling young people to creatively send a message to their generation that wasting food harms the environment. Out of 200 registered participants, 15 teams were formed and informed about the ecological impact of food waste. Their task was to create an audiovisual message on this topic. We also organized several workshops.More info https://www.stopplytvanipotravin.cz Italy: Educational materials were created describing the journey of the national legume Fave beans, from seed to plate. The aim was to make young people aware of how much human labor, water, light, and land is needed to grow this crop. Workshops were held among high school students in the Apulia region, reaching a total of 500 students. Hungary: The approach was based on practical workshops involving both planting and harvesting. Young people experienced the full growing process themselves to understand how demanding it is. Malta: Malta hosted the evaluation of all project partner activities, conducted questionnaire surveys, and organized workshops to present the project results. The project message was also shared with local scouting groups.

Impact

Czech Republic: The winning hackathon spots were published on websites, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. Over the span of one year: The videos were viewed 1,752,233 times They reached 632,999 unique users The videos were played 1,417,190 times We also organized 8 workshops for high school students and corporate employees, where we used the audiovisual messages to educate them about food waste. Italy: The Italian partner prepared and printed a publication on the journey of the Fave bean from seed to plate. It was published online (website and Facebook) and distributed to high schools in Apulia. Workshops for 500 students were organized in that region. Hungary: From spring onward, 7 schools participated in practical growing and workshops. Students cared for the plants they planted themselves and were later able to sell the harvested produce in school shops. Malta: Malta developed questionnaires to measure students’ awareness of food waste, which were distributed to pre-selected groups. They later organized a workshop to present the evaluation of the entire project and showcase the activities of all partners. The outreach included 3,000 university students and 7 scout groups. 113 participants attended a half-day workshop.
