Objectives

The main objective of the Seniors Climate Action (SCA) project was to empower older generations to actively engage with climate change through creative, educational, and digital means. We aimed to address the exclusion of seniors from climate debates and digital environments by creating accessible opportunities for them to participate, learn, and share their perspectives. Building on our previous experience in art and ecology, we wanted to introduce innovative, interdisciplinary methods that connect environmental topics with artistic expression and cultural practice. Another objective was to foster intergenerational and creative communication, enabling younger and older participants to learn from one another and develop new forms of cooperation. We also wanted to strengthen climate and cultural education by creating activities in which seniors could take leadership roles as artists, learners, and communicators. Finally, we aimed to share this specific expertise with European experts, inspiring new approaches to inclusive climate action and sustainable education across borders.

Activities

The Seniors Climate Action (SCA) project was implemented through a diverse set of artistic, educational, and digital activities designed to engage seniors in climate awareness and creative expression. Partners organized workshops and seminars, creative events where seniors explored climate topics through visual arts, design, performance, and interdisciplinary practices. Intergenerational sessions brought seniors and students together, encouraging dialogue, knowledge exchange, and creative collaboration. A digital toolkit and online learning modules were developed to provide accessible resources, while the Kunstmatrix digital platform was used for a virtual gallery showcasing seniors’ artworks on climate and environment. Local and regional events, exhibitions, and fieldwork connected participants directly with their communities and environments, linking theory with practice. Multiplier events in partner countries provided opportunities to share outcomes with experts, educators, and stakeholders across Europe. Throughout the project, emphasis was placed on accessibility, inclusion, and innovation, ensuring seniors were empowered as active participants and communicators of climate action.

Impact

The project delivered a set of concrete outputs and demonstrable results. We produced the SCA Curriculum, detailing learning goals, competencies, session outlines, and facilitation guidance tailored for seniors and intergenerational groups. We launched the e-learning platform with structured units, videos, tasks, and downloadable materials that extend learning beyond workshops and ensure accessibility in different contexts. The SCA Toolkit - a practical collection of guides, exercises, and templates - supported educators and cultural workers in implementing activities. We curated the SCA online gallery on Kunstmatrix, showcasing artworks and creative interventions on climate themes, and staged physical and virtual exhibitions with strong local engagement. Evaluation instruments (questionnaires for seniors, artists, and educators) informed improvements and documented accessibility, usability, and satisfaction. Multiplier events disseminated outputs across Europe, strengthened professional networks, and increased seniors’ digital skills, confidence, and climate literacy. The project also fostered meaningful multigenerational dialogue, demonstrating that artistic and cultural approaches can inspire sustainable behaviours.
