We are developing university courses that train for a new, socially inclusive approach to music education: Music students and music school teachers learn with and from each other how to improvise musically with socially diverse groups of pupils in an open-ended, low-threshold way. The aim is to develop and train a teaching method that enables pupils from different socio-cultural backgrounds to contribute their musical ideas outside the classical repertoire and use them to create music together.

The partner universities establish courses together with with non-university institutions in order to provide training that is as close to practice as possible and in the same time guided by research: Associated schools and pre-schools enable students and trainees to teach socially disadvantaged children in their pupil population. Music schools provide teachers who can pass on their practical experience to students. Lecturers from the universities teach based on research on the project.

Our project creates the long-term conditions to train 21 music educators per year in inclusion-oriented music improvisation pedagogy. Through the new cooperations between university and non-university institutions, 84 pupils per year from socially disadvantaged backgrounds are given the opportunity to create music together with music educators across cultural differences. The project-research makes it possible to communicate and establish the new teaching model in other regions as well.
