▶Objectives
The project aimed to support language teachers in adapting their teaching to digital learning environments where communication, collaboration, and social interaction play a central role. We wanted to help teachers move beyond traditional, teacher-centred methods and gain practical skills for engaging learners in meaningful language use in digital contexts. A key objective was to develop a clear and usable methodology that shows how social interaction can be planned, facilitated, and assessed in digital language education. Alongside this, the project sought to provide structured training that helps teachers build confidence in using digital tools, designing interactive activities, and supporting students with different levels of participation and motivation. Another important goal was to strengthen teachers’ ability to observe and assess communicative and social skills, such as participation, collaboration, and confidence, which are often overlooked in traditional assessment systems. The project also aimed to encourage cooperation between schools, educators, and organisations across countries, creating a shared understanding of effective digital language teaching.
▶Activities
The project was implemented through a structured set of activities carried out collaboratively by all partner organisations. The work started with research, needs analysis, and exchange of practices among partners to establish a shared understanding of social interaction in digital language learning. Based on this common ground, the partnership developed the SIDLE methodology, defining practical approaches for fostering communication, collaboration, and engagement in digital environments. Following this, a complete training programme was designed, consisting of modular learning units supported by a toolkit and a digital handbook. These resources were created to be practical and adaptable, allowing teachers to apply them directly in their classrooms. In parallel, a digital resource platform was developed to host the methodology, training materials, assessment tools, and additional resources, and to support community building and peer exchange. The project also included piloting activities in real educational settings, where teachers tested the methodology and training materials and provided feedback. Dissemination and impact activities were implemented through local and national events, including MEs.
▶Impact
The project produced a set of concrete and practical results that directly support language teachers working in digital learning environments. One key output was the SIDLE methodology https://sidle.eu/resultOne, which provides a clear framework for integrating social interaction into digital language teaching, including guidance on facilitation, learner engagement, and assessment. Another major result was the development of a complete training programme for language teachers https://sidle.eu/mooc. This programme includes structured learning modules, a practical toolkit https://sidle.eu/resultThree, and a digital handbook https://sidle.eu/resultFour designed to help teachers apply the methodology in real classroom situations. The materials focus on communication, collaboration, and meaningful language use, and are adaptable to different educational contexts. The project also delivered a digital resource platform that brings together the methodology, training materials, assessment tools, and additional resources https://sidle.eu/resources. The platform https://sidle.eu/ supports access to the project results and encourages exchange and community building among educators.
