Objectives

The main objectives of the N.A.To project were to create a transnational network of artists, educators, and activists who could employ clowning methodology to raise awareness about climate justice and social change. Besides creating a sustainable European partnership among the participating organizations, a key outcome was developing an open-source toolkit to provide practical and theoretical resources for adult educators, artists, and activists. The toolkit helps them adopt creative, non-hierarchical methods of engaging their communities and reflect on the process of creating projects on their own. Another objective was to foster democratic values through radical imagination, empowering participants to realize their potential to contribute to systemic change and address regional political and social issues across Czechia, Hungary, and Austria.

Activities

A Kick-start Meeting (Czech Republic): The core team defined the principles and structure for collaboration and project workflow. Three events: 1. Exchange of good (clowning) practices (Hungary): Introduced participants to Clowning, Theatre of the Oppressed, and activist techniques, resulting in a public street intervention.2. Queering Spaces through Clowning (Austria): Focused on peeling off gender structures through clowning and asking how social and cultural orders that structure a society can be addressed and how power relations and hegemonic interpretations can be questioned through clowning. This resulted in a queer street intervention in the streets of Vienna. 3. Training Camp for Radical Imagination (Czech Republic): Focused on the application of “clownfrontational” tactics in public spaces. Working groups met in Visalaje and developed specific tools and exercises. Tools and interlinked practices were tested in Ostrava's city center, with a special focus on the city's precarious housing situation. A Dissemination & Evaluation meeting (Czech Republic): The toolkit was drafted during the final evaluation meeting, ensuring that all contributions were incorporated into a practical, open-source guide.
