Objectives

We wanted to contribute to qualify technicians, especially electricians for repairing household devices covered by the EU 'Proposal for a Directive on common rules promoting the repair of goods' in order to increase the success rate of repairs and lower the price for consumers due to faster repair times.

Activities

We implemented a virtual reality (VR) simulation that includes both tutorials as well as free practice opportunities to detect defects and repair a washing machine and a TV set. We also included mandatory safety measurements (VDE Messung) that are necessary after the repair of the device, but are often omiited or not done correctly in practice. We evaluated the application with over 100 participants.

Impact

The VR application is available as APK files for installation on Pico 4 / Pico 4 Ultra, and Quest 3 / Quest 3s devices. The evaluation results show a high acceptance for this kinds of simulations in general and the specific simulation in particular. The VR app will be used in a couple of vocational schools and in commercial trainings conducted by an industry expert that guided us during the project.
