▶Objectives
The EARN project aimed to connect schools, students, teachers, and civil society through student-centered learning that promotes democratic participation and social responsibility. Its core objective was to empower students from FGA and MSL to identify and analyze real community needs—the first phase of the Service-Learning (S-L) cycle—and to transform academic knowledge into meaningful social engagement. Supported by NUCLIO and LdE, the project sought to foster empathy, problem-solving, communication, and civic competences among students. EARN further aimed to strengthen the European dimension of S-L by creating opportunities for cross-border collaboration. Through joint activities, students and teachers were to explore shared challenges and develop adaptability, resilience, and teamwork skills. Teachers were to benefit from training and professional exchange, enabling them to implement S-L more effectively in diverse contexts. The project also aimed to build stronger links between schools and local communities in Landau and São Domingos de Rana, enhance NUCLIO’s and LdE’s capacities as S-L promoters, and lay the groundwork for long-term international cooperation. ▶Activities
Preparation and Training (Landau, Germany): Included one on-site and two online meetings. In Nov 2023, teachers and coordinators met online to refine the programme and review S-L examples. In Feb 2024, a three-day on-site training introduced the S-L methodology, focusing on exploring “real needs.” Portuguese students joined online due to travel constraints. Activities included intercultural exchanges, discussions with experienced MSL students, and visits to local NGOs. A second online meeting (Mar 2024) and national preparatory workshops followed to plan the next steps. Joint Community Research: In Nov 2024 (Portugal) and Feb 2025 (Germany), teachers and students conducted three-day research meetings to identify and analyse “real needs” using interviews, media analysis, and community mapping. They documented issues, discussed solutions, and compared results across both countries. Final Conference and Dissemination: Held in May 2025 at FGA (Portugal), combining internal presentations and public sessions promoting S-L among educators and civil society. An online dossier on European/transnational S-L was created and an online dissemination conference organized for wider dissemination and sustainability.
▶Impact
Analyses and project ideas: Students in Landau and São Domingos de Rana conducted comparative analyses of community needs and developed concrete S-L project ideas addressing local challenges. Competence development: Participation in all phases improved students’ democratic, critical thinking, and social responsibility skills, supporting Erasmus+ goals of civic engagement and active citizenship. Institutional impact: Schools and partner organizations strengthened their capacity for sustainable S-L implementation through shared best practices and increased use of the method. European cooperation: Cross-border collaboration provided practical insights for developing a European S-L concept, promoting solidarity, intercultural dialogue, and social innovation. Dissemination: Results were shared via an online dossier, international online diessemination conference, and a student interview video published on German and Portuguese websites. Final conference and student activities: The closing event featured policy and youth activism sessions, alongside student-led workshops on needs analysis, networking, and curriculum links. Impact: EARN enhanced democratic competences, expanded European cooperation and created transferable tools
