Objectives

Our main objective was to educate and empower individuals—especially students—to adopt sustainable dietary habits that benefit both human health and the environment. Through workshops, campaigns, exhibitions, and a digital app featuring sustainable recipes, we aimed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to make informed food choices. We sought to raise awareness of the environmental impact of current food systems, promote plant-based diets, and encourage responsible, mindful consumption. By highlighting connections between food, sustainability, and community well-being, the project fostered a culture of sustainable living. We also aimed to boost digital resilience by engaging students in creating e-books, posters, videos, and QR-linked resources. Other goals included reducing food waste, supporting local farmers, and promoting appreciation for seasonal produce. Through teamwork and intercultural collaboration, we nurtured civic values, green competences, and creativity. Ultimately, we aimed to shape active citizens who contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future.

Activities

The SAFE project implemented a broad range of activities focused on environmental education, digital innovation and civic engagement. Activities began with planning meetings and digital coding workshops using Scratch and Lego software. Students explored food history through intergenerational interviews and research, cooked traditional sustainable recipes, and created a documentary series. International groups managed an ongoing social media campaign across five online platforms such as project website, Facebook, Instagram, project Youtube Channel and Padlet. Mobilities in Malta, Greece, Italy, Romania, and Finland involved field visits (e.g., farms, eco-factories), biodiversity workshops, carbon footprint analysis, and debates. Robotic and coding workshops were held during each mobility. Students developed sustainable recipes and promoted them via a mobile app created by the Macedonian NGO. Workbooks were created for primary schools and an awareness campaign was carried out targeting healthy consumption. The project culminated with poster exhibitions, video creation, and a public challenge promoting sustainable habits. Each activity was evaluated through surveys, ensuring an ongoing improvement.

Impact

The project achieved a wide range of important outcomes and results through the successful cooperation between the partner countries. The key results include: 1) The workbook for primary students created by students and disseminated to local primary schools in each partner country 2) The development of a multilingual mobile application for Android and iOS featuring over 56 sustainable recipes created by students during the mobilities. 3) An continuing awareness campaign on the project social media channels throughout the project, concluded with a final social media challenge at the end of the project encouraging followers to take part and share their own sustainable ideas 4) Posters, presentations and videos created by students addressing topics related to sustainable food and climate change 5) Cross-border cooperation through debates, visits to eco-farms, and engagement with local businesses and food producers during mobilities. These activities helped students gain firsthand experience with sustainable practices and understand the importance of community-based solutions. 6) Sustainability surveys at the start and end of the project to analyse the impact of the project’s objectives and activities
