Objectives

The Unity in Diversity project aimed to strengthen students’ and teachers’ sense of European identity by exploring shared traditions, languages, and values across partner countries. It encouraged participants to see diversity as a strength and recognize common historical, cultural, and social links. Key goals included fostering active citizenship through the discovery of European traditions, promoting language learning via real-life immersion in French, English, German, and Spanish, and increasing students' motivation and confidence in using foreign languages. The project also focused on environmental awareness, encouraging students to reflect on how traditions can evolve sustainably and to adopt eco-responsible practices within their schools. Finally, it was meant to strengthen cross-border collaboration, allowing partner schools to share best practices, build lasting connections, and cultivate a deeper sense of belonging to the European community for both learners and educators.

Activities

In Bad Bentheim (November 2023), activities included a welcome event, cultural visits (Bad Bentheim, Cologne), scientific and intercultural workshops, and cross-border games in Enschede (Netherlands), with hosting in local families. In Rouen (April 2024), students participated in a scavenger hunt in Rouen, sustainability workshops and activities during a visit to an ecology museum, the OCEAN exhibition, and the GoodPlanet Foundation in Paris. They also explored local eco-practices at La Ferme des Bruyères. In Santander (November 2024), students engaged in environmental research, explored the Costa Quebrada geopark and local industries, visited Santillana del Mar and Altamira Museum, and shared findings with local authorities. Each exchange promoted language immersion, environmental responsibility, and a stronger European identity.

Impact

Throughout the mobility, our three partner organisations achieved a variety of tangible outputs that underscored the interdisciplinary, intercultural, and collaborative nature of the project. Participants wrote travel journals in French to reflect on their experiences and learning outcomes, while the composition of French song fostered creativity and language proficiency. Ongoing communication was supported through the creation of student profiles, and the project’s visibility was enhanced via active social media promotion, a dedicated website, and a YouTube recap video. In addition, the creation of an insect hotel, the gathering of environmental data and thematic posters emphasised the environmental focus and key highlights of the project, demonstrating its broad educational impact.
