Climate change is impacting the four more important wine producing countries in EU over two key aspects: more and more vineyards need water for sustaining their activity, while water resources are becoming scarcer. The project aims to develop a set of tools for the teaching and dissemination of good practices for vineyards irrigation, mitigating the impact of climate change on the economic viability of wine production through the sustainable use of water resources.

The project will develop two main outcomes to provide training answering simple questions raised by end users of irrigation in viticulture, both new and experienced farmers or advisors. First, an e-learning course of 20 hours available in 4 languages with 6 main chapters; second, a field training course provided in a network of exemplary farms, showing best irrigation practices complementary to the e-learning. These courses will be enriched with trainees panel feedbacks and experts validation.

VINIRRIG will develop a methodological framework to gain skills and adapt practices for facing climate change and reduce the water footprint thanks to an e-learning, a Network of Best Irrigation Practices Vineyards and the assessment and dissemination guides. VINIRRIG will be available to advisors and end-users for a minimum of 8 years and will develop a methodology to encourage the dissemination of “VINIRRIG knowledge” across Europe.
