▶Objectives
In the world of people with intellectual disabilities, one of the most important objectives is to develop self-advocacy and autonomy. Self-empowerment begins at a personal level with self-awareness, the recognition and assertive expression of one's own needs. At the community level, self-advocacy means consciously representing, defending and asserting the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, including in different political arenas. This is the main objective of the LépÉsKÉK programme, in a way adapted to the individual capacities of the people with intellectual disabilities participating in the programme. Self-empowerment requires that people with intellectual disabilities are able to make decisions independently or with the support of others. Our aim was to provide opportunities for this throughout the project. Another condition for self-empowerment is accessible, readable and understandable information for people with intellectual disabilities. We therefore aimed to produce materials that are easy to understand. All of this requires professionals who understand self-advocacy, supported decision-making, and know the methodology for producing easy-to-understand information. We plan to train professionals to do this.
