▶Objectives
The project's primary objective was to combat online sexual abuse while fostering digital safety, gender equality, and inclusive democratic participation. Through WP2 #BeTheChange, we developed digital sexual education materials addressing key topics such as consent and safe sexting, tailored to youth aged 13-25, specially boys and young men. Meanwhile, WP3 #MyOnlineUtopia amplified youth perspectives, envisioning safer digital spaces and informing tools to combat toxicity. Resources created included youth-centric guides, digital education tools, and leadership development frameworks for youth workers. The project succeeded in equipping participants with practical skills to address online abuse, advocate for inclusivity, and foster healthier digital interactions, achieving its overarching goal of building a safer and more inclusive internet for all.
▶Activities
The project was implemented in three overlapping phases: research, creation, and Dissemination. The Research phase started long before this project did and was the basis the project is built on. In addition, we gathered youth perspectives through #MyOnlineUtopia to understand online abuse and their vision for a safer digital environment. The Creation phase produced evidence-based educational materials on digital safety and online abuse prevention. Activities in this phase included brainstorming, writing materials, coding, recording, and more. These were cooperation activities where each partner used strengths and skills of their staff to contribute. Results of the work are listed below. For Dissemination, we participated in local conferences: Finland’s largest youth worker fair in Tampere, Iceland's largest annual youth worker conference. In addition to this we also organized a conference with Meta and TikTok representatives to discuss online safety, presented research findings, lobbied for policy reforms, and equipped youth workers with tools to engage youth in safe online practices. We reached thousands of youth across the participating countries, fostering a more inclusive and empowered digital culture.
▶Impact
We developed several resources to promote online safety and inclusivity: The Organizer’s Handbook provides guidelines for creating safe, inclusive gaming communities. Our research report, "If I Were Boss of the Internet," gathered youth insights on online safety, highlighting solutions to digital challenges. We conducted youth seminars on three key topics identified by surveys, delivered in various formats, and created a guide for youth workers to replicate these sessions. Supplementary materials include TikTok videos for Finnish youth addressing self-expression online and short Icelandic videos on consent and digital safety. Interactive tools include text/chat-fictions simulating harmful online behaviors to promote healthier communication. The Nude Game, an educational tool on safe sexting. A Discord bot that shares the game and raises awareness about non-consensual image sharing.
