Enhancing quality of internship programs through experience sharing among sending and hosting organizations in Europe

The project aimed to improve the quality and effectiveness of internship programmes by fostering collaboration and sharing best practices among sending and hosting organisations, tutors and interns from three European countries. We sought to address common challenges such as insufficient supervision, lack of structure, and misalignment with labour market needs. Specifically, thought the outputs of the project we: (1) enabled the exchange of experiences and good practices to raise the quality of internships; (2) developed practical guidelines that reflected the needs and expectations of learners, tutors, employers, and organisations accross 3 countries; and (3) strengthened communication and cooperation between stakeholders to build more effective and inclusive programmes. By achieving these objectives, we intended to make VET activities more attractive, support the creation of meaningful work-based learning experiences, and enhance young people’s employability. The project also aimed to contribute to the internationalisation strategies of VET providers by trying to build networks, strengthening the existing ones and facilitating cross-border partnerships that would support high-quality mobility opportunities across Europe.

The project was implemented through five main activities. First, we carried out management, coordination and quality assurance activities, including three transnational partner meetings in Malta, Ireland and Italy, and regular online meetings to monitor progress. Second, we conducted a baseline study to identify challenges and best practices in internship programmes across 3 European targed countris: Malta, Italy, Ireland through literature reviews, surveys, and focus groups involving organisations, employers, tutors, and interns. Based on these findings, we prepared athe 'QUALITY' handbook comprising guidelines and recommendations for designing and managing high-quality internships. Next, we organised 3 masterclasses in partner countries, bringing together sending and hosting organisations, employers, students and tutors to exchange experiences, discuss best practices, and strengthen their capacity. Finally, we carried out dissemination activities, including final dissemination activities in each partner country, social media campaigns, and press releases, to share project results, promote collaboration, and engage stakeholders at local, national, and European levels.

We developed a comprehensive baseline study that identified key challenges and documented best practices in work-based learning across Europe. Based on this research, we created a handbook offering clear guidelines and practical recommendations for designing, implementing, and evaluating internship programmes, addressing the needs of learners, tutors, employers, and organisations. Through a series of masterclasses, we strengthened the skills and capacities of stakeholders involved, enhanced cross-border cooperation, and promoted knowledge exchange on effective practices. The dissemination activities, including final dissemination activities in each partner country and the online dissemination of the activities/products, increased awareness of the importance of quality internships and extended the project’s impact to a wider audience.
