▶Objectives
The Future of Youth Orchestras wanted to find ways to give young orchestra musicians tools on how to access the labour market more easily by increasing their knowledge about musician’s health, youth participation, and the use of digital tools. The knowledge of leading experts in the field of music physiology was combined with professional music training. We wanted to achieve a great rehearsal experience and a fantastic concert of more than 120 young musicians from Hamburg and Norway playing together.
▶Activities
The activities we implemented were 1) committees with young participants for every aspect of the project to increase youth participation, 2) use of digital tools throughout planning and execution, 3) hands-on lessons and production of video training lessons on performance warm-up routines, 4) noise measurements to build awareness for using hearing protection, and 5) development of a virtual reality stage fright training. We also had rehearsals, concerts and social activities.
▶Impact
The result of our project is a toolbox available on tfoyo.eu. There one can find results from the research, warm-up videos, information about hearing protection, and much more. We have also made a mini-documentary and written four articles that are easy to read for people about musicians’ health. There is also a report about how extensive use of digital tools and youth participation in all aspects of the project is the future of youth orchestras. All our results are free and available online.
