โถObjectives
In implementing the project, we wanted to respond to the urgent needs of those involved in caring for the seriously and terminally ill - both formal and informal caregivers, as well as families and the patients themselves. Our goal was to create the conditions for informed, empathetic and professional support for people at the end of life and to increase public sensitivity to the dying process. We believe that openness to the subject of death, understanding of emotions and the ability to communicate are crucial for dignified accompaniment in the last moments of life. We developed training scenarios and validation tools as a foundation for further education and professionalization. We aimed to increase the emotional and social competence of caregivers, fill the educational gap in thanatopedagogy, promote a holistic approach to the needs of patients and their caregivers, and educate paraprofessionals. We also aimed to create tools for formal and non-formal education and to initiate social change, leading to greater awareness and understanding of the process of passing away.
โถActivities
The project developed, tested and disseminated an emotional support programme for carers of terminally ill people. An international team with experts from three countries was set up to establish a management structure and timetable for activities. A review of the literature and existing educational programmes was conducted, producing country reports identifying gaps in the support system. This was followed by interviews with patients and their carers and a design thinking workshop (24 hours in total), resulting in the design of a training programme. A 24-hour course, methodological guide and validation tools were developed and translated into partner languages and English. The programme was tested with each organisation - a total of 36 participants in the pilot. Revisions to the materials were made after feedback was collected. The results of the project were presented at conferences (three national, one international) and in the media. The project supported the development of professional competences in palliative care and strengthened international cooperation. The effects will be long-term - improving the quality of emotional care and the preparation of carers.
โถImpact
The project created a comprehensive competency workshop program (24 hours+ guide) to develop the social and emotional competencies of those supporting terminally and terminally ill patients and their loved ones. The program included lesson plans, practical exercises, educational materials and assessment and self-reflection tools. It focused on emotional communication, empathy, attentive listening, recognizing the needs of patients and working with difficult emotions. The program was tested in practice during 6 pilot workshops ( each 24h), and 36 participants successfully completed the training and validation process. The project strengthened international cooperation in the exchange of knowledge, experience and good practices, developing models of coordination and communication. A network of contacts with organizations working in the fields of palliative care, psychology and education was expanded, increasing the potential for implementing further initiatives. The project was successful, producing tangible educational and social results and laying a solid foundation for further activities in thanatopedagogy and community support.
