Objectives

With this project, we aimed to achieve four main objectives: 1) to contribute to the recognition of Artistic Residencies (AR) as spaces for non-formal, individual and collective learning; 2) to reflect on the reality of ARs in the different partner countries and produce a set of guidelines and good practices for their implementation; 3) to encourage the creation of a European network of ARs, promoting mobility, the exchange of experiences and the development of collaborative artistic projects involving artists with and without disabilities; and 4) to build the capacity of Casa de Vilar and the other partners to develop and run future ARs, expanding their reach to new audiences and territories. We also sought to raise awareness among cultural organisations of the formative, social and inclusive role of the arts, strengthening their connection with communities and promoting equitable access to artistic creation and enjoyment in innovative and accessible contexts.

Activities

The project started in 2023 and all planned activities were implemented, except for the printing of the final book. We held four thinking tanks or round tables — “What?”, “Why?”, “What 4?” and “How?” — in Portugal, Greece and Italy, with the participation of adult artists, invited experts and cultural organisations. Each session provided a space for collaborative reflection on key themes related to Artistic Residencies (AR), exploring existing practices, needs and opportunities, and generating collective knowledge. These discussions led to reflective outputs that contributed to the development of the Good Practices Guide. In parallel, partnership meetings, management and production activities, and a continuous communication plan (website, social media, newsletters) were carried out, ensuring visibility and alignment with the Erasmus+ identity. The fifth activity — editing of the bilingual (PT/EN) book — was completed in content, but printing was postponed due to a delay from the graphic designer. The book was made available in PDF. The final event was replaced by an online team meeting.

Impact

Key results: 1) A bilingual book (PT and EN), available in PDF format, with content organised into chapters corresponding to the actions “What?”, “Why?”, “What 4?” and “How?”, including methodologies, reflections and testimonials; 2) Newsletters produced after each round table, summarising key contributions and insights; 3) A chapter dedicated to the analysis of survey results collected from participants in the partner countries; 4) A collective discussion around the future creation of a Mediterranean network of artistic residencies, involving current partners and other cultural actors; 5) Active online presence, with content shared via the website, Facebook, Instagram and Vimeo; 6) Although not originally planned, interviews were conducted with artists, curators and residency organisers, shared as digital episodes and used as key material for the final documentary; 7) While there is no formal continuity plan, several meetings have taken place to prepare a future application to the Creative Europe programme. All project outputs are freely available and open-access.
