To streamline officials’ work, our project aimed to develop a method for creating templates to formalize public art processes while deepening knowledge of legal frameworks and practical routines. Model templates could be of use, but the mere strategy was more important. Our goal was to ease administrative burdens, allowing responsible parties more time and resources to support artists and their work and make the acquisition process better. With an idea of a method in place, we formed high-quality workshops and educational programs, generating materials applicable across Europe. In the long term, we saw public art and other cultural expressions in shared spaces gaining a stronger foothold—both in professional practice and as essential pillars of a democratic society, fostering free expression and open debate.

A crucial element in developing a method and strategy for better templates was dialogue, interviews, and statistical research in the field of public art. This investigation played a key role in shaping our work and led to early-stage seminars and workshops with target groups. These activities were well received, and during the project, we presented at three major art summits, fostering new connections and potential future collaborations. The seminars functioned both as discussion forums and as opportunities to test our findings in an educational setting. They also strengthened our ties with key stakeholders who can further develop our work, including Jönköping, Kiruna, Falun, Gotland, Uusimaa, Jakobstad/Pietarsaari, and potentially Turku, Helsinki, and national organizations in both Finland and Sweden. We produced informational materials, courses, and tools on our platform in collaboration with Upphandlingsbryggan. In this work we developed model-lectures, workshops schemes and templates for strategic work and use success-stories as base for these.We also appeared on national conferences featuring presentation of the project and concluded with a final seminar with key participants, further expanding our outreach and impact.

The main outcome is above all a vital discussion and the creation of a learning community to improve the processes in public art by highlighting the real challenges in the field, developing tools for enhancement, and providing practical methods. Through early-stage educational seminars and presentations, we built strong engagement, enabling further refinement of our tools and broader adoption by more stakeholders. Our project webpage, presents challenges and advice to situations familiar to those working in the field, allowing the material to inform and enhance local processes. Additionally, our strong network (4500 contacts) and our participation at conferences have gained widespread recognition for our work. As a result, new opportunities have emerged, including four serious collaborations in Finland and Sweden, directly stemming from this small-scale partnership. One good example to mention was the work with better contracts in one city, where the developers in the art department now have been consulted to apply the same methodology to other departments in the organization. While that was not our primary aim, it is still a good sign, both in showing how the method and the improved documents actually can improve.
