▶Objectives
By implementing this project, we wanted to give inmates the opportunity to promote their personal development and equip them with important soft skills and coping strategies. Our goal was to create a space where participants could not only strengthen their resilience, but also learn to deal with challenges constructively – both during their imprisonment and afterwards. It was particularly important to us to show inmates perspectives that go beyond their current situation. We wanted to help them develop skills that would enable them to better reintegrate into society. By designing the training courses to be practice-oriented and tailored to individual needs, we wanted to enable each participant to implement concrete changes in their everyday lives. Our overarching goal with the project was to make a lasting contribution that would benefit not only the inmates but ultimately society as well, by helping to increase their chances of a constructive and self-determined future.
▶Activities
As part of the project, we conducted two central project weeks – one in Klagenfurt and one in Bodo, Norway. During these weeks, we worked intensively on the development of the course and the corresponding card material. In close collaboration, we developed the content and structure of the course, which helps inmates strengthen their soft skills and learn stress management strategies. At the same time, we developed practical card material that provides participants with concrete support in challenging everyday situations. A particularly important aspect was the close collaboration in tandem discussions, where one person from Austria and one from Norway worked together on the content. This tandem work promoted intercultural exchange and allowed different perspectives and approaches to be integrated into the course design and card material. Through this creative and collaborative process, we ensured that both the needs of the inmates and the diverse cultural and professional approaches were incorporated into the development of the project.
▶Impact
The concrete results of the project primarily include the development of a practice-oriented training course and innovative map material that can continue to be used after the course has ended to ensure a certain degree of sustainability. The course was developed in close cooperation between the project partners from Austria and Norway. It focuses on promoting soft skills, resilience, and coping strategies to help inmates strengthen their social skills and better cope with stressful or challenging situations. The course was designed to include both theoretical and practical elements and to provide participants with long-term tools. Another key outcome was the creation of card material that offers inmates concrete strategies for stress management and problem solving. The cards are a practical resource designed to provide participants with quick help in difficult moments. They were developed based on the content of the course and offer easy-to-understand instructions for dealing with stressful situations. These cards can be used flexibly and help participants apply their newly learned skills directly in everyday life.
