Objectives

The main project objective was to support SMEs implementing Artificial Intelligence tools in their daily practices, thus enhancing their efficiency and performances. To do this, the project wanted to achieve the following concrete objectives: - To improve awareness of SMEs on the benefits of integrating AI tools in their daily practices - To improve knowledge, skills and competencies of SMEs’ managers and workers on how to implement and leverage AI technologies in their daily practices

Activities

AI is transforming business and society and its applications are embedded in software, devices, and platforms, impacting firm performance and industries. The AI market is projected to reach $407 billion by 2027, with a 37.3% annual growth rate until 2030. (EC, Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence, 2021; Forbes, 2023). The EU Commission sees AI as a key driver for the EU economy, setting a target in the Digital Decade Policy Programme 2030 for at least 75% of businesses to use AI by 2030. However, with the current European average of 7.91% adoption (DESI Index, 2022), this target remains far off, especially for SMEs. SMEs face greater challenges, including a lack of awareness and readiness, with only 8% using AI, compared to 28% of large enterprises (Eurostat, 2022). In Spain, just 7.03% of SMEs use AI, while Belgium and Germany are at 9.30% and 9.90%, respectively. The OECD emphasizes the need for targeted AI policies to support SMEs in their digital transformation (OECD, 2019). The European enterprise survey (2020) suggests that barriers can be overcome by improving AI skills, and LinkedIn (2020) notes that Europe’s AI expert population could more than double with specific learning opportunities.
