By implementing this project, we aimed to achieve several key objectives focused on upskilling, networking, and fostering innovation among cultural heritage managers. Our primary goal was to support the development of sustainable, socially inclusive, and green management practices for fortified heritage sites. Specifically, we seeked to create new programs and activities designed to increase the participation and engagement of adult visitors, particularly seniors. Through these efforts, we aimed to promote the inclusion of elderly citizens, empowering them to actively participate in cultural heritage activities while raising their awareness of the important connections between cultural heritage and sustainability. Our main goal was to transform fortified heritage sites into dynamic learning spaces for local communities. We aimed to raise environmental awareness and encourage civic participation, especially among elderly visitors, making these sites centers of lifelong learning and sustainable development. This project was about more than just improving the skills of heritage managers—it was about creating real, lasting change in how communities connect with and benefit from their cultural heritage.

Project partners carried out various activities to ensure effective collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of sustainable, inclusive programs for senior citizens at cultural heritage sites. A kick-off meeting was held in the first month to establish readiness and clarify next steps for project execution. Throughout the project, ten online progress meetings facilitated regular monitoring, smooth implementation, and cooperation among partners. On-site hubs were organized in Šibenik, Rasnov, and Kaunas, focusing on cultural engagement, knowledge sharing, and tailored activities for senior citizens. To ensure the project addressed the specific needs of seniors, meetings and surveys with seniors were conducted, with feedback used to refine activities. Three local events in partner regions showcased the project’s results and celebrated the involvement of senior citizens in developed programmes. To secure long-term cooperation, cooperation agreements were formalized with senior associations. One of the most important project outcome was an online brochure “Sustain4Seniors in Cultural Heritage Sites Roadmap” which documents lessons learned, innovative ideas, and activities to inspire broader adoption.

The project delivered significant outputs and long-term results aligned with its goal of fostering sustainable and inclusive management of fortified heritage sites. Each partner developed new program for seniors which includes sustainable, inclusive activities, ensuring long-term implementation Three on-site hubs in Šibenik, Rasnov, and Kaunas facilitated knowledge sharing and cultural engagement. Each partner hosted a final event at the end of the project to present the achieved results to their local communities. These events have showcased and publicly launched the developed programmes and promoted signed agreements with seniors’ associations to ensure the sustainability of newly developed programmes and activities and to present the online project brochure. Online Brochure: The “Sustain4Seniors in Cultural Heritage Sites Roadmap” compiled lessons learned and innovative ideas to inspire other heritage sites. Cooperation Agreements were signed with senior associations guaranteeing the continuation of programs and inclusion of elderly citizens. Partner organizations gained practical expertise in sustainability, green management, and community engagement through peer learning hubs.
