Objectives

The main goal of our project was to create a knowledge base, a knowledge cloud, that new mothers (and their supporting family members, helpers, and organizations) can turn to at any time. In which they can meet all the important issues that concern mothers in the nine months after giving birth, and where experts talk in a way that is easy for new (and often sleep-deprived) mothers to understand, accept, and process. Our goal was to create a platform where we talk directly about what is really important for new mothers, where there is no judgment and where we do not increase the already high expectations for them. This is how the definition of the project was formulated, according to us: The Second Nine (Months) is a collaboration that provides support to mothers in the ups and downs of the postpartum period. It supports mothers in • daring to listen to their own inner instincts, • daring to believe that they are competent in their own motherhood, • becoming a good enough mother.

Activities

During the Second Nine project, our main activity was the production of 20 podcasts. We produced the podcasts according to a carefully structured curriculum. Some of the conversations took place between the project team members, while in the others we spoke with external experts on topics in their fields. This resulted in a material that can answer most of the most important questions that mothers have during the second nine months after giving birth. 19 of these are in Hungarian, and the 20th is in English. This is a guide for those who would like to adapt our project to their own language. We created an e-book format booklet from the podcast material, which contains the essence of the conversations, in an easily digestible form. This is also available in English, accompanied by a written guide in English. We completed the online materials with mother circles, both in person and online. We supported the Second Nine project with a carefully structured brand strategy and communication plan. We communicated the project and our completed materials to our target audience in numerous formats and channels.

Impact

We produced 20 podcast episodes along with an e-book which is available both in Hungarian and in English. We organized a total of 18 mother circles, 12 of which were held in person in different settlements (Budapest, Tapolca and Szabadka), and mothers were able to participate in 6 mother circles online. By the end of the project, the podcasts had a total of more than 7,000 views and plays. We received very good feedback from professionals and private individuals about the project, many of whom highlighted how much it was needed. We also had a ‘sister project’ – the Becoming Parents project was very similar to ours, targeting the next age group of new parents, so we were able to support each other on our platforms. In addition, we would like to continue the work we started during the Second Nine with part of the team, and we are currently working on several project drafts.
