▶Objectives
The primary objective of this project was to address a significant societal challenge faced by subject teachers working in plurilingual classrooms where the language of instruction is the majority language. Specifically, our aim was to bridge the gap in higher education teacher training by providing equitable access to high-quality, university-level courses for both pre-service and in-service educators. Through international cooperation, we set out to collaboratively design and implement two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) available in four languages, English, Polish, German and Spanish. These courses are intended to offer accessible, research-informed professional development, culminating in international certification upon completion. By doing so, we sought to support formal and non-formal, self-guided learning opportunities and empower teachers with the knowledge and practical strategies necessary to effectively teach in multilingual and diverse classroom settings.
▶Activities
To implement the project, we carried out a series of coordinated activities aimed at strengthening teacher preparation for plurilingual and linguistically diverse classrooms. We began by establishing a partnership among three universities, pooling our expertise in inclusive education, curriculum design, and multilingual pedagogies. Together, we designed and developed two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) available in four languages, specifically tailored for both pre-service and in-service teachers. The course content was grounded in up-to-date research on language integration, multiliteracies, and subject teaching in diverse educational settings. We worked closely with national and regional teacher development institutions to ensure the relevance and quality of the materials. In addition, we created flexible learning pathways by offering the MOOCs for both formal and non-formal, self-directed learning, with international certification awarded upon successful completion. These activities allowed us to offer accessible, research-informed professional development opportunities to educators across Europe.
▶Impact
The project resulted in the creation of two MOOCs originally developed in English and translated into three additional languages, ensuring equal, open access to high-quality educational materials across diverse linguistic contexts. These courses were designed with a strong focus on usability, ethical considerations, and responsible digital practices, reflecting the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in both education and society. In addition to the MOOCs, we developed an internationally recognized certification system to formally acknowledge participants’ learning achievements. The project also generated broader social and environmental value by promoting sustainable digital learning and reducing the ecological and social footprint associated with traditional training formats. Furthermore, the project contributed to the integration of cultural assistants with refugee backgrounds into educational settings, supporting their active engagement and inclusion within the school environment.
