Objectives

Through this project, we wanted to create meaningful educational experiences that would deepen students’ understanding of geology, environmental science, and sustainability in both regions. By comparing the natural environments of Lappajärvi and Italy, students could explore how geological features influence local communities, economies, and ecosystems. We also aimed to inspire young people to appreciate the importance of preserving natural heritage for future generations. It helped them to develop a balanced mindset, combining logical analysis and creative problem-solving with ethical reflection. It also equipped students with practical skills in observation, experimentation, data analysis, and collaboration.

Activities

In Finland, we organized several nature-based excursions to immerse participants in the local environment. Students trekked through a bog ecosystem to observe native vegetation and experience the clean air firsthand. A highlight was a visit to the rim of the Lappajärvi crater lake, where a geologist gave an engaging lecture on the impact structure’s origin and significance. Participants collected soil samples to analyze their composition and understand how soil types influence vegetation. We also introduced local traditions by making food from local ingredients, testing natural products and enjoying a traditional Finnish sauna followed by a refreshing dip in the lake. In Italy, the focus shifted to exploring the intersection of natural and cultural heritage. We explored the layers of history in Rome, gaining insight into how the city has developed over centuries. One of the most memorable activities was a visit to a volcanic nature park in Tuscany, where students witnessed the unique geothermal landscape of Larderello and learned about the ecological and energy-producing potential of geothermal activity.

Impact

Key tangible results included student surveys and field reports based on soil and vegetation analysis. In addition, we gathered experience firsthand as we were given lectures on sites about geology, sustainability and cultural heritage, had discussions and made observations about the geological and environmental differences between Finland and Italy. Another concrete achievement was the establishment of partnerships between the schools, as well as connections with local businesses and regional producers that can lead to future collaboration opportunities and support for local products and sustainable tourism. Among the broader outcomes, participants developed a deeper understanding of how natural resources can be used responsibly for health, recreation, and economic benefit.The project fostered international cooperation, intercultural understanding, and a sense of environmental responsibility. Activities sparked students’ interest in science, nature, and sustainability. An essential lesson we all took away is that our interaction with nature should always be guided by respect, responsibility, and the aim to protect it for future generations.
