▶Activities
An initial videoconference meeting launched the project by forming six mixed crews (based on diverse skills: scientific, nautical, communication, digital, and different nationalities). In September 2024, the "Peril in the Sea of Marmara" activity brought the crews together in Istanbul for an immersive scientific exploration: sailing in the Sea of Marmara, collecting water samples (coastal and open sea) to analyze salinity, dissolved oxygen, and microbial diversity. They observed the geological impacts of earthquakes, attended a seismologist's conference on seismic risks, and documented pollution linked to disasters. Back at their schools, the "Scientific Insights and Analysis" activity began, lasting six months, during which students processed samples in laboratories: conducting scientific analyses, comparing results via videoconferences, cross-referencing data, and organizing roundtables in Istanbul to deepen understanding of geodynamic and environmental contexts. In April 2025, a COP or United Nations Conference simulation on the theme "Addressing the Inevitable Growing Seismic Threat" was held with four committees.
▶Impact
The collection and analysis of scientific data, roundtables, conferences, and the COP or United Nations Conference simulation enabled the production of educational and awareness-raising materials on the interactions between earthquakes and biodiversity, as well as the impact of earthquakes on populations and the environment. Seven pedagogical tools, five UN resolutions, a dedicated website, and digital portfolios ensure lasting dissemination, accessible on the "FrenchShip" project website.(https://sites.google.com/sj.k12.tr/frenchship-istanbul/activit%C3%A9-4?authuser=0) Students strengthened their STEM, intercultural, and civic skills, with a focus on inclusion (girls in STEM) and cohesion despite heterogeneity, gaining civic awareness about natural disasters and marine biodiversity preservation. Students became environmental "ambassadors." Teachers adopted interdisciplinary, innovative, and immersive approaches (sailing, science, debates). The project promoted ecological transition (sailing) and digital transformation (videoconferences).
