Digital mediators and helpers strive to make digital technology accessible to every individual and support EU citizens’ digital skills to enhance their digital, social and economic inclusion. The ALGO-LIT project aims at at improving the algorithmic literacy skills of more than 5,000 digital mediators to better support citizens, including the most vulnerable, to understand algorithmic-based decisions and effectively exercise their right to transparency and information.
▶Activities
ALGO-LIT aims to map, connect, train and equip digital mediators and helpers on the topic of algorithm transparency. Building on prior research and experience, an action-research methodology will document mediation needs and practices in the field of algorithmic literacy ; share practices and train digital mediators and helpers ; co-construct and adapt mediation tools with the community ; promote and institutionalise mediation skills in the field of algorithmic transparency across the EU.
▶Impact
ALGO-LIT will provide the first comparative Barometer of algorithmic mediation practices across 3 EU countries; structure a network of 5,000 digital mediators around the challenge of algorithmic transparency; make available an Algorithmic Transparency Mediation Kit to support their work; establish an Algorithmic Literacy Competency Framework to enrich and build future certifications and trainings; and offer policy recommendations to improve policy responses to algorithmic literacy needs.
