Objectives

The main objective of the project was to increase the climate literacy of older adults and persons with disabilities (PwD), who are often excluded from education and highly vulnerable to climate impacts. We developed a non-formal learning programme that connects climate literacy with everyday life skills (health, finance, media, digital literacy) to provide practical tools for decision-making. An important goal was to introduce innovative andragogical methods: we tested the “Climate Fresk” and created our own climate cards adapted to older adults and PwD, enabling learning through play and discussion. We also aimed to train educators to work with this target group and ensure delivery of workshops directly in local communities. Through a strong media outreach (radio, TV, articles, videos, picture book), we reached those unable to attend in person. Strengthening partner capacities and building a cross-border cooperation network were key priorities. Ultimately, the goal was to empower older adults and PwD to become active participants, to share climate knowledge within their families — especially with younger generations — and to ensure they are recognised as relevant contributors in climate change adaptation.

Activities

Throughout the project, we carried out activities focused on improving the climate literacy of older adults and persons with disabilities (PwD). We started with a needs assessment survey involving 278 respondents, which served as the basis for developing the education program for the target group and the Training of Trainers (ToT). A ToT was implemented for 13 participants from 9 organizations, and innovative learning tools were developed – after testing the “Climate Fresk” method, we created our own climate cards fully adapted to older adults and PwD. A total of 14 workshops were held in Croatia and Serbia, engaging more than 130 participants. The workshops also served as a pilot for evaluating and adjusting the methodology based on user feedback. To ensure a wide outreach, total of over 100 educational and informative media outputs were produced (radio, TV and newspaper, video materials) 23 EPALE articles, accompanied by more than 170 social media posts and 70+ website publications. Furthermore, 12 round tables and both an opening and a final conference were organized. All materials were published online (websites, social media, YouTube, EPALE), securing strong visibility and long-term sustainability of project results.

Impact

The project delivered concrete and measurable results. A needs assessment was conducted and used to develop the climate literacy education programme, the ToT curriculum, the climate literacy handbook and the trainers’ manual. A ToT was carried out for 13 participants from 9 organisations; all completed their practical teaching during workshops and received certificates. We developed an innovative educational tool – climate cards – tested during 14 workshops in Croatia and Serbia with more than 130 older adults/PwDs, increasing their climate, health, financial, media and digital literacy. A substantial number of educational outputs were produced and published: 43 radio reports, 2 TV reports, 5 newspaper articles, 10 video materials, 26 social media posts, 26 website posts and 23 articles published on the EPALE platform, as well as a picture book and digital handbooks. 12 round tables and both opening and closing conferences were organised. Beyond tangible outputs, the project increased older adults’ confidence and motivation, strengthened partners’ capacities and fostered a sustainable cooperation network that will continue educational activities after the project’s completion.
