▶Objectives
The main goal of the project was to transmit to the children the importance of traditional handicrafts in their own and a foreign culture, getting in touch with local artisans and getting to know various techniques, while keeping in mind the sustainability and idea of recycling instead of buying new materials. Moreover, we wanted to transmit the value of living in remote areas (in a time when young people desire to move to cities) and the beauty of transforming raw, available materials into useful things of everyday life. Children should be more conscious of where things come from and how they’re produced. Moreover we wished for a collaboration with a school in a foreign country like Estonia to widen the horizon of the children and gain new knowledge and skills.
▶Activities
The project was divided in three main activities: COURSES - creation and implementation of handicraft courses: First we made a list of possible courses in the region and decided together with the children which ones they are more interested in, then we created in cooperation with the teachers and associations the different courses for all the school year and put them in practice. In each course there were theoretical parts and practical ones in which the children created various objects individually or in teams which they could bring home (or leave at school for common use) EXCHANGES - we organised with the children two cross country exchanges with the partner organisations to discover a foreign culture in a similar remote area, its traditions and creating an enriching cooperation to learn from each other. ONLINE BOOK: We co-created with the children an online book with a collection of course-descriptions, pictures, reports of the exchanges and the overall progress of the project to offer to the public an insight and inspire others to put in practice similar activities with children on traditional handicrafts and sustainability.
