A Circular Approach to Surgical Waste Management: Reducing Environmental, Economic, and Health Impacts
▶Objectives
The project aims to mitigate the environmental, economic, and health implications of surgical waste by equipping healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge to implement circular economy principles in surgical waste management. Key objectives include reducing environmental impact, enhancing awareness and knowledge of waste reduction techniques, and fostering a culture of sustainability within healthcare settings.
▶Activities
Key activities include forming Green Teams in hospitals to drive sustainability initiatives. A study visit to Finland will provide insight into green healthcare practices. A training program will be developed, covering waste reduction, recycling techniques, and circular economy principles. This will include physical pilot trainings and online training activity, and a dissemination campaign involving online resources, and final conferences to maximize outreach.
▶Impact
The project aims to achieve measurable reductions in surgical waste, increased adoption of sustainable practices and a replicable training programme for healthcare professionals. Outcomes will include the creation of Green Teams at hospitals, improved skills among healthcare workers, and a comprehensive course on sustainable waste management. It will promote long-term environmental impact within and beyond the partner institutions by fostering knowledge sharing and creating accessible resources.
