Objectives

- Enhance professional development of correctional staff in adult education. - Improve awareness of need for pedagogical skills to support dyslexic inmates. - Assist in creating tailored interventions for adult prisoners with dyslexia. - Develop a flexible teaching approach for prison staff. - Implement a screening tool and adapted learning materials to meet inmates' needs. - Foster collaboration among consortium partners and wider LiberateSkills partners to share expertise. - Share results

Activities

FLEX-ability develops an evidence-based method of pre-screening inmates for learning disorders. Prison staff’s awareness will be raised of the impact of dyslexia on reintegration. Staff will be trained and guided to enhance their pedagogical skills and values to enhance learning processes in prison settings. Piloted outputs will be transferable across jurisdictions, and shared on the LiberateSkills online platform with worksheets and ready to apply materials to be delivered to dyslexic inmates.

Impact

Training prison officers will enhance their professional development and foster a flexible teaching approach for dyslexic inmates, benefiting both staff and prisoners. Equipping officers with the skills to address dyslexia will boost inmates’ motivation for learning, encouraging positive change in attitudes and behaviours. This, in turn, will support their reintegration into society, both during and after detention, leading to wider social impact.
