▶Objectives
Suicide causes immense personal and economic loss, costing €9.07 billion yearly in the EU (2015). WHO and researchers highlight education as key in prevention, yet academic gaps persist. Few higher education programs offer basic or advanced suicide prevention training, leaving teachers and students underprepared. This project aims to strengthen academic resilience by developing innovative, scalable online courses to improve suicide prevention knowledge, skills, and attitudes in universities.
▶Activities
To achieve project goals, our inclusive and diverse partnership uniting suicide prevention, education and international policy experts will implement activities in two phases. Phase I: Conduct international surveys, develop the ERE online course with risk scenario training, and create a 12 Steps Safety Plan for Academia. Phase II: Evaluate program impact, advocate curriculum integration, and disseminate events like the European Summer School of Suicidology and a strategic meeting in Brussels.
▶Impact
The ERE project will deliver scalable, sustainable results aligned with inclusive education goals: a large-scale needs assessment of over 1200 participants, an online suicide prevention curriculum tailored to four target groups, a robust evaluation system measuring learning outcomes, and a comprehensive dissemination strategy. Outcomes include a policy document for curriculum integration, European Summer School of Suicidology, a workshop in Vilnius, and a high-level strategic meeting in Brussels
