Run for Equality
▶Summary
In 2014, based on the results of a research carried out by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights, more than 50% of European LGBTI people try to avoid specific places for fear of not being able to declare their identity. In 42% of these cases, the mentioned places are clubs and sports associations.According to another international research “Out on the Fields: The first international study on homophobia in sport”, the 82% of participants said they had suffered or had witnessed homophobia; more than 50% claimed to have directly suffered physical or verbal harassment; and 28% of the heterosexual sample reported being personally involved in discriminatory acts based on homophobic prejudice. These simple data clearly demonstrates the disadvantage and the threatened mood of LGBTI people in sports environments, which are strictly connected with sexism and homotransphobia in the whole society as well. Nevertheless, studies and guidelines about Human Rights Education and Education Through Sports strongly suggest that sport can be switched from a highly discrimination risk environment to a pedagogical tool, especially for the set off implicit values and relational experience which is based on.
