โ–ถSummary

Background Women continue to be largely marginalised from the decision making and leadershipsphere of sport. Structural barriers through discriminatory norms, values, and institutional practices in how sport is โ€œdoneโ€ still vastly limit womenโ€™s options and opportunities, as does the cultural context of sport and the legacy of many years of under-investment in women leadership. This situation has an EU dimension that is clearly emerged through the project, despite differences among countries. Objectives SUE aimed to identify the most significant barriers to women's leadership in sport, raise awareness of the issues and implement training to support women in these positions as well as shifting the cultural and structural environment in order to catalyse further progress. Involving women in disadvantaged groups was also a key goal, valorising a peersโ€™ approach with athletes and activists. Implementation EU research produced a report analysing the common barriers for women in sports leadership and handbook of good practices that challenge common narratives on women's absence from leadership roles and offer inspiration and practical paths. We jointly created training toolkit for athletes and leaders, with facilitators guides, tested in 3 countries, supported by a digital community to connect athletes, video interviews of athletes and leaders involved and manual on reporting gender discrimination. Achievements Despite common stereotypes, women are highly interested in leadership, deeming sports knowledge and soft skills as key prerequisites. Structural discrimination limits access and success in such positions, women often quit due to unsupportive environment. Genderbased discrimination is prevalent and men leaders struggle to identify it. Existing support structures, training and career paths for women are inadequate. Reporting mechanisms are worryingly insufficient and hard to use effectively.
