Summary

Background Looking at society at large, migrant and ethnic minority women are belonging to the most excluded and vulnerable groups in Europe. Migrant and minority women experience double discrimination, gender and racial. Against this backdrop SPIN network organisations developed the SPIN Women project to show the different perspectives of migrant and ethnic minority women and to develop strategies to increase their involvement in sports. Objectives The overall objective of “Sport Inclusion of Migrant and Minority Women: Promoting sports participation and leadership capacities” (SPIN Women) project was to encourage social inclusion and equal opportunities of women and girls with an immigrant or ethnic minority background through increased participation in sports. A key aim was to capacity-build, empower and increase qualification of female sport actors and multipliers (coaches, administrators, referees …) with migrant or minority background Implementation In a first phase an empirical data base was created about barriers and strategies of migrant girls in sport (WP1). In a second step, training tools were developed and sport stakeholders brought together on a table (WP2). A third phase was aimed at policy level: a magazine by the players union as well as the European closing conference in Vienna characterized a strong transnational focus (WP3). Through events in the EWoS, animated videos and a touring exhibition public awareness was raised (WP4). Achievements The main deliverables include the Study report “Equal access and participation of migrant women & girls in sport”, Brochure “Action Research for inclusion: migrant women & girls in sport”, Mentoring Guideline (pdf), Sport Inclusion Toolkit (pdf), special edition W” football magazine, 8 animated vides, Connecting took (website), Exhibition [in]visible–herstories of minority and migrant women in sport, exhibition booklet (EN/DE), Conference Report (pdf), EWOS poster, Final Evaluation Report (pdf).
