PROFESSIONAL SKILLS IN ADAPTED SURFING
โถSummary
Background Surfing waves is a popular recreational activity enjoyed by many. Countless surf schools mostly along the Atlantic coast line of Europe are well experienced in teaching this challenging sport. However the vast majority of surfschools is ill equipped to adequately coach people with disability interested in learning the sport. The aim of INCLUSEA is to provide an entry-point for coaches to a more inclusive surf experience and to promote the safety, autonomy and enjoyment of all surfers. Objectives The INCLUSEA toolkit seeks to overcome one of the key barriers for long term sustainability in adapted surfing: a lack of opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing across industry, institutions and organisations. This toolkit is not meant as a replacement for existing approaches or as a comprehensive review of adapted surfing methods. It offers a cohesive and detailed synthesis of the foundational knowledge of current best practices across multiple adaptive surf programmes. Implementation The development of the toolkit was structured into 5 work packages (WP) and 3 intellectual outputs (IO):WP1 โ Coordination & ManagementWP2 / IO1 โ State of the art researchWP3 / IO2 โ Methodology definition WP4 / IO3 โ Pilot activity, validation & final conclusion WP5 โ Dissemination & communication During the project, 4 transnational meetings were held in workshop-style events where intermediate results were discussed and the next steps were defined. KoM had to be online due to COVID-19. Achievements The INCLUSEA project lays the groundwork for a common approach to adaptive surf coaching. It synthesises the current best practices in adaptive surfing from leading adaptive surfing organisations in Europe and beyond. The toolkit offers open-access, evidence-based guidance tailored to best fit the diverse context in which adaptive surf programmes are delivered. Piloting activity proves the toolkit is a great resource for training staff in the context of adaptive surf programmes.
