โ–ถSummary

Background Outdoor sports can be essential to ensure greater mental and physical resilience for citizens and connect people to nature, environmental issues, and the sustainable development agenda. The Sustainability and Environmental Education in Outdoor Sports (SEE) project aims to enhance the protection of natural landscapes through education in and through sports, with a special focus on responsible behaviour and skill development for outdoor sports leaders, trainers, guides, or instructors. Objectives To better understand the challenges of managing natural and protected areas and outdoor sports. Examine examples of where sports activities are excluded or severely restricted, to understand what leadership training systems are in place for various outdoor sports in the partner countries. To ascertain what environmentally sustainable education programmes are being implemented as part of the leadership training programmes within the partner countries Implementation WP1 collected data on challenges in protected areas & outdoor sports. Reports are on project site & shared at European conferences. In WP2, partners contributed on leadership training & environmental education. An exchange program highlighted sustainable practices, engaging experts & creating resources. WP3 refined a toolkit using WP2's methodology, testing usability & gathering feedback. European case studies improved toolkit's robustness. Achievements The SEE Project offers reports for 26 outdoor sports on its website. A toolkit launched in November 2023 at an international symposium is also available online. Additionally, it provides educational support for guides, instructors, and leaders in natural areas, along with training for sports federations to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability, fostering a connection with nature and responsible citizenship.
